Welcome to follow the weaving projects of Riitta Kiukas, a travel designer and now also a weaver. Kutoen Weaving Studio organizes weaving workshops and sells products designed and hand-made by Riitta. The Kutoen Weaving Studio is located in the middle of the most beautiful, southern Finnish countryside only 1 hour from Helsinki.

Hand-woven interior textiles
In Finnish homes, you can see a lot of hand-woven textiles – ryas, carpets, tablecloths, towels, and blankets. Weaving has long traditions in our country.
I am interested in gradually creating a whole guesthouse full of design textiles handwoven. This will take time and will give a topic for many more articles. The first project included woolen textiles for a family guestroom including two curtains for bunk beds, a bed runner, a pillow, and two carpets. It all started by coloring the yarn as it is very difficult to find the same tone of color in different types of wool.

The bed runner was made by using an 8-shift waffle pattern with an effect created by yellowish yarn

The rest of the year was spent on a rya pillow woven 2-sided, so we only had to sew two seams by hand.
Last but not least we needed woolen carpets as the floors will be cold in spring and late autumn. The stripe is created by using coloured rug.

Weaving workshops
In the summer months from May to September we also offer weaving workshops. You can come and weave an interior textile for yourself. We’ll make it easy for you by preparing the loom ready, so you can do the fun part.
At the moment we ony have one loom and one guestroom, so it works for 1-2 people at a time. The weaving workshop starts by planning the project forehand and ordering the materials for you. When you arrive, you will get instructions and can start working with your project immediately. Naturally, you will get guidance when needed.
